I still enjoy your great show. Reliable, relaxed & well researched. But, guys, you should devote your next kickstarter to get money for someone who edits your audio. It takes workload from you and frees your devoted listeners (like me…) from always normalizing/limiting the podcast to be able to hear it even in noisy environment (like a car). Best wishes and welcome back from the short hiatus.

Hi Wolf, thanks for the feedback. We appreciate the compliments. Getting an editor is not in the budget, but I’m not experiencing the same thing you are, either. I listen in the car and with one earbud all the time. To me it is very normalized, if only slightly quieter than other podcasts I listen to. Let me tell you the work flow, and see if there’s a step you think would help.

    1) We record our Skype call with Audio Hijack in an uncompressed stereo WAV file.
    2) I run the audio file through Levelator to normalize the levels.
    3) I start up a new podcast file in Garage Band 6.0.4 and record my intro directly into it. Intro is at 0dB and the intro music at -6dB.
    4) I load the podcast recording in on the 0dB channel.
    5) Edit the podcast.
    6) Load the outro into the -6dB Channel.
    7) Export the file as 128 bit Mono file.
    8) Load the file into iTunes to add picture and other metadata. Export that.
    9) Upload the file to Libsyn.

So that’s my process. I put a lot of time into making sure the levels are okay. I can understand if the sound goes through some level changes between the intro and the main body, and between the main body and the outro, but I listen to it like I do a lot of other podcasts, and I don’t hear what you’re hearing.

One more comment on this. I put this thread in a podcast editing Facebook group, and it seems my levels are way lower than they should be. I’ll work on it, and maybe consider hiring an editor. If not, I’ll find a better solution for dealing with dynamic range and compression. Thanks for sticking with us.
