“Candyman” Reboot Is Happening

Spread the love

It seems after many months of speculation and rumors that a Candyman reboot or as the filmmakers are calling it “a spiritual sequel” is happening after all. Jordan Peele of Get Out fame will produce a new film to be directed by Nia DaCosta who helmed the crime-drama Little Woods. Jordan Peele had this to say about the upcoming movie:

“The original was a landmark film for black representation in the horror genre. Alongside ‘Night of the Living Dead,’ ‘Candyman’ was a major inspiration for me as a filmmaker — and to have a bold new talent like Nia at the helm of this project is truly exciting. We are honored to bring the next chapter in the ‘Candyman’ canon to life and eager to provide new audiences with an entry point to Clive Barker’s legend.”

Peele will produce through his Monkeypaw Productions Company and MGM will produce and finance “Candyman,” with Universal handling domestic theatrical distribution.  The movie has a release date set for June 12, 2020 with production to start this Spring.

The filmmakers are taking the story back to Candyman’s original stomping grounds of Cabrini Green as well. Hopefully, Tony Todd will be reprising the role of the Candyman too. Like Doug Bradley, I can’t see anyone else playing the character. But this is exciting news for all Clive Barker and Candyman fans. With Jordan Peele on board to help make the movie the film should be in good hands.
