Final Verdict: Does The Scarlet Gospels Pass the Grade?

Spread the love

It’s been a few days since The Scarlet Gospels graced bookshelves across the US and UK! Now The Podcast would like to know what your thoughts on the book are. Did it live up to the hype after all these years? The overall opinion seems to be very positive from the comments I’ve read on various websites. So share your thoughts on the book below in our comment section. We love to hear from our listeners as much as possible.

I feel in a bit of a daze now that I’ve finished it! Clive squeezed so much juice into a very compact 360 pages that I’m sure I haven’t really taken it all in. It set off from page 1 at a hell of a pace and I thoroughly enjoyed every bit of it.

I did find it difficult separating the extended Hellraiser film/comic universe from Clive’s original vision – eg no mention of Leviathan – and questioned how the experience would have been different if I hadn’t known in advance that the Hell Priest was getting killed off by the end?

I’d be interested to know if Clive has any paintings from writing the book. I’d love to see his vision of Lucifer’s throne and the Quo’oto, the Hell Priest clad in the King of Hell ‘s armour waging war against the resurrected devil, or the destruction of hell itself.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts Ben. I’ve been able to ignore the comic/movie continuity. For one I’ve never read any of those comics so maybe that’s a good thing. I’m on page 101 right now where Harry has just gotten the note from Norma. The New Orleans stuff was great. I really enjoyed all the material when Harry was investigating Goode’s House.

I’d also like to know if Clive has done any paintings of this. 🙂

I loved the book! I am a new Clive Barker fan. I was curious when i heard about Scarlet Gospels was coming out, then i found this podcast and started listening. Well i loved the podcast and it got me hooked. I have now seen Lord of Illusions, Night Breed, Hellraiser and Hellbound. And i have read Hellbound Heart, Books of Blood, Scarlet Gospels, and i am going to start reading Great and Secret Show. Scarlet Gospels was amazing, exciting and original. Love Harry D’Amour.

I’m loving the book so far. I’ve got about a 80 pages left. I’m really getting anxious to see how Pinhead, oh sorry, Hell Priest goes out. I’m also glad the podcast has gotten you more into Clive Barker. That’s actually what happened to me. I’d read a lot of Barker in my High school years and then stopped but I found the podcast and started listening. It really got me to get more involved in the world of Clive Barker again. That’s the genius of Ryan and Jose for doing this podcast. I’m very thankful for all they do. And if you enjoyed The Scarlet Gospels you love the Great Secret Show! Don’t forget to checkout Everville after that. That’s a trilogy that’s he trying to finish. For me after the Scarlet Gospels I’m probably going to read some bios on Barker and what to know more about the man. Anyway, thanks for the kind words and always give us feedback. We love to listen our fans.
